Red Ruby, and Prodigy—to portray Mr. Herb Miller, our high school math/science teacher with a somewhat mysterious background, who is recruited to be the group’s band director.
He becomes the catalyst in forming the Knights of Swing—and later it is revealed that he is the older brother of the famous big band legend, Glenn Miller. We learn that Herb has left his promising life of music behind after his brother’s tragic death.
Mr. Miller finds himself again through the optimism and passion of his students wan6ng to form “a really swingin’ big band.” Their camaraderie and willingness to embrace their diversity inspire him to confront his troubled past and overcome his personal doubts about himself.
In the end, Mr. Miller grows outside of his isolated self as he re-discovers his love for music through the band, and his romance with the local “Red White and Blue Café” waitress, Marlene (played by Kathy Christopherson).
